How We Help

We offer:

Client Services Volunteers who can assist an individual who has a palliative diagnosis with: Companionship, emotional/spiritual/social support, running errands, recreational activities, crafts, light meal preparation, reading, music, child care, creating life stories, navigating the health care system, filling in forms, and many other tasks.

Caregiver Support Volunteers can be matched with caregivers to provide emotional support, relief and assistance.

Bereavement Support

Bereavement Drop-In Schedule

This bereavement service is available to anyone who has experienced the death of a loved-one and would like support to walk through the pain.  Please join us in a time of confidential sharing and support. 

Bereavement meetings are facilitated by two trained volunteers, with the Coordinator of Bereavement Services present.  You will become aware, that in the midst of your unique pain, you are in a normal process.  You can come to a  place of new life, comfort, and hope.  You can connect with and be supported by others.  There is no fee for this service.

Grief Support Group - Uxbridge
A seven week Grief Support Group for anyone who has experienced the death of a loved one and would like support to walk through the pain.

A Daughter's Grief
An eight-week Grief Support Group for Women whose Mother has died.
Held at Durham Hospice Whitby location, 209 Dundas Street E. LL Units 1 & 2, Whitby ON.  Next group starting in April 1st, running to May 20, from 7-9pm.

There is no fee for sessions. Registration is required, please call Kathryn Roberts 905-430-4522 ext 21.

There is no fee. 

Costs for the staff and physical infrastructure needed to support our volunteers are funded through a grant from the Ministry of Health & Long-Term Care, private gifts, in-memoriam donations and fund-raising activities.  Donations are always welcome.

Durham Hospice provides services to the residents of Durham Region. Referrals can be made to other hospices bordering our area.

Library and Information Services

Durham Hospice has a variety of library resources available to help you cope with a terminal illness.  We have a large selection of books and videos for loan on living with a terminal illness, facing death, dying, care-giving and coping with loss.

Educational Programs

Durham Hospice offers a number of educational programs and resources to help people learn about hospice, care-giving, volunteering, hospice palliative care and grief & bereavement.

We are able to attend your meeting or function and talk about hospice and bereavement services. Contact us to book a time.

Volunteer Training
Our 30-hour introductory hospice palliative care training program gives volunteers general, required knowledge and skill to support people and families facing a terminal illness, death and bereavement.
